Worked example
A36 steel sheet
- Inputs
- One 24 × 48 × 0.060 in rectangular sheet at a nominal density of 0.283 lb/in³.
- Result
- Volume = 69.12 in³ and estimated weight = 19.56 lb.
Length multiplied by width and thickness gives material volume; multiplying that volume by density gives weight.
Common questions
What to know before using the result
- Can I calculate a circular plate or disc?
- Yes. Under Sheet, choose Round, then enter diameter, thickness, quantity, and material density.
- Is sheet gauge the same thickness for every metal?
- No. Gauge-to-thickness values vary by material system. Use the actual thickness or the linked material-specific gauge chart.
- Why can actual plate weight differ?
- Thickness tolerance, alloy density, mill variation, coatings, holes, cutouts, and edge preparation can change finished weight from a nominal rectangular estimate.
Formula
m = A × L × ρ
The selected flat or tube geometry gives volume. Rectangular tube includes rounded outside and concentric inside corners. Mass is volume multiplied by density.

Assumptions and limits
- Dimension-based estimates assume uniform thickness and nominal dimensions.
- Rectangular tube uses the entered outside radius and a concentric inside radius equal to outside radius minus wall thickness.
- Standard pipe, conduit, and copper-tube presets use nominal dimensions and representative material densities.
- Tube estimates exclude fittings, couplings, coatings, weld seams, and manufacturing tolerances.
- Surface area includes outer, inner, edge, and open-end faces where applicable.
- Published density values are representative; verify alloy certificates when tolerances matter.
