How to use the calculator

  1. 1Under Sheet or Tube, choose Rectangular or Round to match your part.

  3. 3For circular tube profiles, choose a Fabworks tube or load a standard steel pipe, PVC pipe, EMT, IMC, RMC, or copper water-tube size.

Worked example

Steel sheet weight

Inputs
One 24 × 48 × 0.060 in rectangular sheet at a nominal density of 0.283 lb/in³.
Result
Volume = 69.12 in³ and estimated weight = 19.56 lb.

The rectangular volume is length × width × thickness. Multiplying that volume by density gives the estimated weight.

Common questions

What to know before using the result

Can this calculate pipe and round tube weight?
Yes. Enter outside diameter and wall thickness directly, or choose nominal-size presets for ASTM A53 steel pipe, Schedule 40 or 80 PVC, EMT, IMC, RMC, and Type K, L, or M copper water tube.
Does a nominal pipe or conduit size equal its outside diameter?
Usually not. A standard preset converts the nominal or trade size into the listed outside diameter and wall thickness before calculating volume and weight.
Can I calculate the weight of wood, plywood, plastic, or composite panels?
Yes. Use the rectangular sheet, plate, or panel profile and select a matching material density. Because natural wood, engineered panels, and composites vary by grade and moisture content, use a supplier density or the custom-density option when accuracy matters.
Does rectangular tube weight include corner radii?
Yes. Enter the outside corner radius, or choose a Fabworks tube preset. The calculator offsets the inside corner concentrically using an inside radius equal to the outside radius minus the wall thickness.
Why can catalog weight differ from calculated weight?
Nominal dimensions, wall and sheet tolerances, corner radii, alloy density, coatings, weld seams, and mill practices can all change actual weight.

Formula

m = A × L × ρ

The selected flat or tube geometry gives volume. Rectangular tube includes rounded outside and concentric inside corners. Mass is volume multiplied by density.

Assumptions and limits

  • Dimension-based estimates assume uniform thickness and nominal dimensions.
  • Rectangular tube uses the entered outside radius and a concentric inside radius equal to outside radius minus wall thickness.
  • Standard pipe, conduit, and copper-tube presets use nominal dimensions and representative material densities.
  • Tube estimates exclude fittings, couplings, coatings, weld seams, and manufacturing tolerances.
  • Surface area includes outer, inner, edge, and open-end faces where applicable.
  • Published density values are representative; verify alloy certificates when tolerances matter.
