Quick answer
How this pipe & tube weight calculator works
Pipe and tube weight equals hollow cross-sectional area multiplied by length and material density. Select a standard steel pipe, PVC pipe, electrical conduit, or copper water-tube size, or enter dimensions for round, square, and rectangular tubing.
How to use the calculator
- 1Choose Circular for pipe, conduit, copper water tube, or round tubing; choose Rectangular for square or rectangular tubing.
- 2Select a standard size preset or enter outside dimensions, wall thickness, cut length, and quantity.
- 3Choose the matching material density or enter a custom density from the manufacturer or supplier.
- 4Read total weight and review volume, surface area, nominal-size assumptions, and units before using the estimate.
Worked example
2-inch Schedule 40 steel pipe
- Inputs
- One 10 ft length with a 2.375 in outside diameter, 0.154 in wall, and steel density of 0.2836 lb/in³.
- Result
- Estimated pipe weight = 36.6 lb.
The nominal 2-inch size is converted to its actual outside diameter and wall before the hollow-cylinder volume is multiplied by steel density.
Common questions
What to know before using the result
- Is nominal pipe size the same as outside diameter?
- Usually not. Nominal pipe and conduit trade sizes are names. A standard preset loads the corresponding actual outside diameter and wall thickness.
- Which pipe and conduit families are included?
- The catalog includes Schedule 40 and 80 steel pipe, Schedule 40 and 80 PVC pipe, EMT, IMC, RMC, and Type K, L, and M copper water tube.
- Can I calculate square or rectangular tube weight?
- Yes. Under Tube, choose Rectangular and enter width, height, wall, length, and outside corner radius. Fabworks stock sizes are available with Fabworks materials.
- Does the result include fittings or coatings?
- No. Add fittings, couplings, coatings, weld seams, and manufacturing tolerances separately when they materially affect assembly weight.
Formula
m = A × L × ρ
The selected flat or tube geometry gives volume. Rectangular tube includes rounded outside and concentric inside corners. Mass is volume multiplied by density.
Assumptions and limits
- Dimension-based estimates assume uniform thickness and nominal dimensions.
- Rectangular tube uses the entered outside radius and a concentric inside radius equal to outside radius minus wall thickness.
- Standard pipe, conduit, and copper-tube presets use nominal dimensions and representative material densities.
- Tube estimates exclude fittings, couplings, coatings, weld seams, and manufacturing tolerances.
- Surface area includes outer, inner, edge, and open-end faces where applicable.
- Published density values are representative; verify alloy certificates when tolerances matter.
