Laser Cutting

What design files do I need for Laser Cutting?

Fabworks accepts both 2D DXF and 3D STEP files.

Fabworks accepts 2D DXF files for flat sheet parts and 3D STEP or STP files for flat sheet, bent sheet, and tube parts. Files can be up to 24MB.

Choose the format that matches your part:

  • Upload DXF for a flat 2D sheet profile. The uploader checks units, layers, scale, open geometry, and part thickness before creating the quote.
  • Upload STEP or STP when the part has bends, is made from tube, includes modeled 3D features, or is part of a multipart assembly.

STEP carries the geometry Fabworks needs to unfold bends, identify tube profiles, detect modeled countersinks and counterbores, and split multipart assemblies.

When creating your design files, keep in mind:

Ensure your model is to scale and uses the correct units (preferably inches). For sheet metal parts, model them in their final bent state rather than as flat patterns. Include any holes or features needed for hardware, tapping, or other operations, but do not model thread geometry, or countersinks.

If you're unsure how to export your 3D design as a STEP file, see our guides for Onshape and Fusion 360. For the smoothest experience, always double-check your design before uploading it to our instant quoting platform. If you have any questions about file preparation or need assistance, our support team is here to help.
