How does powder coating work?

Powder coating involves coating the surface with a dry powder so it can later be melted, hardened, and cured to create a uniform protective layer. How long does a powder coating last?

The time a powder coat lasts depends on many different things, primarily the environment the part is in, and the level of maintenance given to the surface. Powder coating is known for its durability compared to standard paint, and can last for many years if in the right conditions. When properly cared for a powder coat is very resistant to chipping, or fading. But if exposed to extreme environments the lifespan of the coat will be affected. To maintain your powder coat, use non-hard methods of cleaning such as mild soap with water. Don’t use abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals.

Designing around Powder Coating

Powder coating can slightly alter the dimensions of your part by adding between 2 and 4 thousandths of an inch to each surface. Make sure to tolerance parts correctly to ensure a proper fit.
